The Reptile Centre is continually evolving with the newest addition being the amazing Fossil Cave. It took Erica and Murray from Nature Themes almost five weeks to construct the interior of the Fossil Cave.
Michael Durrant spent months casting the hundreds of fossil specimens for the exhibit which traces the rise of the reptilian fauna from the sea over 200 million years ago to the present. The Fossil Cave is a welcomed addition to the Reptile Centre providing a fascinating look at the reptiles that once dominated our vast landscape. The Fossil Cave was partly funded through the Federal Government's Australian Tourism Development Program. The Hon. Fran Bailey MP, Federal Tourism Minister officially opened the Fossil Cave on the 5th July 2006. The Fossil Cave was made the ideal location to host the Steve Irwin tribute night in September 2006. Almost $400 was raised and donated to a local wildlife rehabilitation organisation, Wildcare Inc. in memory of the Crocodile Hunter.
The Fossil Cave is the ideal place to start your visit to the Reptile Centre. Journey through time to see the reptiles that once roamed our ancient land, then move into the live exhibits to get up close to the reptile fauna that dominates the Northern Territory landscapes today.
